The Development Squad

The Development Squad is the first step into competitive swimming at Flyers Swim Team. Designed for swimmers progressing from Mini Squad or for older primary school children who have completed Learn to Swim, this squad introduces young athletes to official racing and club competitions in a fun, supportive, and team-focused environment.

What to Expect:
In the Development Squad, swimmers build on their foundational skills, developing strong technique across all four strokes with a special emphasis on medley swimming. Athletes learn how to train as part of a squad, develop discipline and confidence, and are guided through their first experiences with official racing in a positive and encouraging way.

Who is it for?

  • Age: Typically 8–11 years old

  • Entry: For swimmers who have completed Mini Squad or Learn to Swim and are ready to begin their competitive swimming journey

Competitions

  • Development Squad swimmers are encouraged to participate in a range of beginner-friendly competitions, including:

    • Club Nights & Club Championships

    • Encouragement Meets

    • All Junior Competition

    • District Championships

Most races are 50m and 100m, providing a great introduction to competitive swimming.

Equipment Needed

  • Drink bottle

  • Correctly sized kickboard and fins
(If you’re unsure about sizing, your coach can help!)

  • For optimal movement and effective coaching, Flyers Swim Team suggests boys wear swim training briefs, while girls should choose a one-piece or two-piece training swimsuit. Please avoid wearing loose shorts, rash vests, or t-shirts, as these can limit mobility in the water and make it more challenging for coaches to observe and correct technique.

Progression Pathway

Swimmers who:

  • Consistently attend at least 2 sessions per week

  • Show progress in skills and technique

  • Regularly participate in competitions

  • Are ready for more commitment

...will be considered for advancement to the Junior Squad. Progression reviews typically occur at the start of each term, but can happen at any time based on coach recommendation.
