The Junior Squad

The Junior Squad is the next stage in the Flyers Swim Team pathway, designed for swimmers who have progressed from the Development Squad. This squad offers increased training opportunities and is suited for older primary and early secondary school swimmers who are aiming to achieve qualifying times for metropolitan swimming championships.

What to Expect

In the Junior Squad, athletes continue to refine their skills across all four strokes, with a greater focus on advanced technique, endurance, and racing strategies. Swimmers in this group experience a more challenging training environment, develop consistency and commitment, and are encouraged to set and achieve personal goals in both training and competition.

Who is it for?

  • Age: Typically 10–13 years old

  • Entry: For swimmers who have successfully completed the Development Squad and are ready to increase their training load and competitive focus

Training Commitment

  • Attend 3–4 sessions per week at Peninsula Aquatic Recreation Centre (PARC) in Frankston or YAWA Aquatic Centre in Rosebud

  • Emphasis on advanced technique, aerobic fitness, and race preparation

  • Learn about goal setting, competition planning, and personal responsibility within the squad

  • Demonstrate teamwork, leadership, and a strong work ethic

Training breaks are communicated in advance. Sessions run during school holidays, but not on public holidays.

Competitions

  • Development Squad swimmers are encouraged to participate in a range of beginner-friendly competitions, including:

    • Club Nights & Club Championships

    • Encouragement Meets

    • All Junior Competition

    • District Championships

      Most races are 50m and 100m, providing a great introduction to competitive swimming.

Equipment Needed

  • Drink bottle

  • Kickboard, fins, pull-bouy, snorkel and other required squad equipment

Competitions

Junior Squad swimmers are expected to participate regularly in club and external meets, including:

  • Club Nights & Club Championships

  • District Championships

  • Metro qualifying meets

  • Other suitable competitions as advised by coaches

Swimmers in this group typically race 50m, 100m, and 200m events, with the goal of achieving metropolitan qualifying times.

Pathway for Progression

Swimmers who:

  • Consistently attend at least 3 sessions per week

  • Show ongoing improvement in skills and race results

  • Regularly compete in meets and demonstrate readiness for increased training

  • Are committed to their swimming development

...will be considered for progression to the Intermediate Squad. Progression reviews are conducted at the start of each term or as recommended by coaches.
