The Intermediate Squad

The Intermediate Squad is the next progression in the Flyers Swim Team pathway, designed for older swimmers who have advanced from the Junior Squad. This squad is tailored for athletes who regularly compete at metropolitan championships and are working towards achieving state qualifying times.

What to Expect

In the Intermediate Squad, swimmers focus on further refining their technique, building endurance, and mastering advanced race strategies. Training is more intensive and structured, challenging athletes to push their limits while fostering a strong team spirit and leadership skills. Swimmers are encouraged to take greater ownership of their training and competition goals as they prepare for state-level racing.

Who is it for?

  • Age: Typically 12–15 years old

  • Entry: For swimmers who have successfully completed the Junior Squad, consistently compete at metro championships, and are close to or achieving state qualifying times

Training Commitments

  • Attend 4–5 sessions per week at Peninsula Aquatic Recreation Centre (PARC) in Frankston or YAWA Aquatic Centre in Rosebud

  • Focus on advanced stroke technique, aerobic and anaerobic fitness, and high-level race skills

  • Develop competition routines, goal setting, and personal accountability

  • Exhibit leadership, resilience, and a commitment to team values

Training Timetable

Training breaks are communicated in advance. Sessions run during school holidays, but not on public holidays.

Competitions

Intermediate Squad swimmers are expected to compete regularly in:

  • Club Nights & Club Championships

  • District Championships

  • Metro Championships

  • State qualifying meets

  • Additional competitions as recommended by coaches

Swimmers typically race 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and longer events, with a focus on achieving and improving state qualifying times.

Equipment Needed

  • Drink bottle

  • Kickboard, fins, pull-bouy, and all required squad equipment

Pathway for Progression

Swimmers who:

  • Consistently attend at least 4 sessions per week

  • Show continuous improvement in training and race results

  • Actively participate in targeted competitions

  • Demonstrate readiness for increased training and competitive demands

...will be considered for progression to the Senior Squad. Progression is reviewed at the start of each term or as recommended by coaches.
