The Mini Squad

The Mini Squad is the essential next step for young swimmers ready to move from Learn to Swim lessons into a fun, supportive, and non-competitive squad environment.

This squad is designed to help our youngest and mightiest swimmers build the foundations of swimming technique and skills across all four strokes. Swimmers will learn how to operate as part of a team, develop discipline and confidence, and be introduced to in-house race nights in a positive and encouraging way.

Who is it for?

  • Age: Primarily for swimmers aged 6–10 years

  • Entry: Ideal for those who have completed Learn to Swim lessons and are ready for the next challenge

Training Expectations

  • Attend 1–2 sessions per week at Peninsula Aquatic Recreation Centre (PARC)

  • Participate in a mix of technique, skill-building, and fitness-focused sets

  • Learn squad routines, lane etiquette, and the basics of goal setting

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude, teamwork, and willingness to learn

Training Timetable

Training breaks are communicated in advance. Sessions run during school holidays, but not on public holidays.

Location

  • Venue: Peninsula Aquatic Recreation Centre, 16N Cranbourne Rd, Frankston VIC 3199

  • Contact: julie@peninsulaflyers.org.au

Equipment Needed

  • Drink bottle

  • Correctly sized kickboard and fins
(If you’re unsure about sizing, your coach can help!)

  • For optimal movement and effective coaching, Flyers Swim Team suggests boys wear swim training briefs, while girls should choose a one-piece or two-piece training swimsuit. Please avoid wearing loose shorts, rash vests, or t-shirts, as these can limit mobility in the water and make it more challenging for coaches to observe and correct technique.

Progression Pathway

Swimmers who:

  • Consistently attend at least 2 sessions per week

  • Demonstrate learning and application of new skills

  • Regularly participate at in-house race nights

  • Are physically and mentally ready for increased commitment

…will be considered for progression to the Junior Squad.
Progression is typically reviewed at the start of each term but can occur at any time at the coach’s discretion.
